This symphony has been performed only a few times, including once during Yves Klein’s lifetime. Dominique Levy Gallery, working closely with the Estate of Yves Klein and the Yves Klein Archives, mounted a performance of the symphony at a church in Manhattan in 2013, and presents a performance at Grace Cathedral with its online partner ARTSY, conducted by Petr Kotik.
Yves Klein (1928-1962) was the leading member of the French artistic movement nouveau realisme, and a pioneer in the development of performance art, minimal art and pop art. When he was 20, he created the Monotone-Silence Symphony, which consists of a single-20-minute sustained chord followed by 20 minutes of silence.
